Are Deep Tissue Massages Supposed to Be Painful?
When we work with massage clients in NJ for deep tissue massages, the first session is often approached with a little hesitation. Deep tissue massages can promote amazing relaxation and wellness, but are they going to hurt? Should a deep tissue massage be painful? Not unless you like it that way—keep reading to see how the best massage therapists in NJ do deep tissue massages that make you feel better, not sore!
What is a Deep Tissue Massage?
A deep tissue massage is pretty much what its name sounds like—a deep massage, reaching the tissues that are deeper inside of your body instead of just the surface ones. This is usually focused on your back, neck, and neck, and may be used on legs and shoulders as well. Deep tissue massage must be firm in order to go “deep” enough to reach these large muscles. However, it should not be excessively painful!
Pain Vs. Soreness During Your Massage in Franklin Lakes
You should expect some soreness after a deep tissue massage, much like your muscles may feel sore after a long workout at the gym, or after running a few miles. But soreness should not be quite painful—soreness should make you almost feel good, encourage you to stretch, and not be distressing or disruptive. Pain, on the other hand, will not feel good, may encourage you to stay stiff and still to avoid more pain, and may cause you distress or disrupt sleep or concentration. Pain is not the goal!
Your Comfort Matters at Our Massage Therapy Office
When you visit our massage office in New Jersey, we make it our mission to provide you with comfort and relaxation from the moment you walk in. With deep tissue massage, we want to make sure that you are comfortable—that requires communication. Some of our clients come in with muscles as hard as rocks, and lean right into the deepest of deep pressure. If this feels good to you, let us know! Others come in with higher pain sensitivity, prior injuries, or a general aversion to pain. Once again—let your massage therapist know! You don’t get any bragging rights for a deeper or harder massage, but you will get the best massage by clearly communicating your needs to your massage therapist.
Not sure if deep tissue massage is right for you? Swedish massage tends to be more gentle and is always an option, but if you’re curious about dep tissue massage, ask your massage therapist for a sample of the pressure that may be used so you make the best decision about your next massage therapy appointment.
